Best Aperitivo Bars in Rome: Where to Drink

The Ritual, Explained

Aperitivo is the pre-dinner drink-plus-snacks ritual that structures the Roman evening — order a spritz, a negroni, or a glass of wine any time from around 18:30, and most bars bring out a spread of olives, chips, focaccia, or a full buffet included in the price of the drink. It's not dinner (don't treat it as one), but a well-chosen aperitivo stop can genuinely delay dinner by an hour without anyone minding.

Trastevere: The Classic Setting

Freni e Frizioni — a former mechanic's garage turned cocktail bar — is the neighbourhood's benchmark: a generous buffet with every drink, and a courtyard that fills up fast once the sun goes down. It set the template that most of Trastevere's other aperitivo bars still follow, and remains the one worth prioritising if you only have time for one.

Pigneto: Where It Gets Creative

Co.So Cocktail Bar, run by a former Vatican bartender, builds its menu around Roman flavours — a Carbonara-inspired cocktail is the signature order, served in a room too small to ever feel anything but packed. Pigneto more broadly rewards a bar crawl rather than a single stop; Yeah! Pigneto down the street is the scruffier, cheaper counterpart for later in the night.

The Speakeasy

Jerry Thomas Speakeasy, near Campo de' Fiori, is credited with reviving Italy's cocktail scene — a password, a hidden door, and bartenders who take Prohibition-era technique seriously. A membership card is required at the door but easily arranged on arrival; book ahead, this fills up.

Monti's Wine Bar Scene

Ai Tre Scalini is Monti's answer to the aperitivo hour — smaller, wine-focused rather than cocktail-focused, and just as likely to have you standing on the cobblestones outside as sitting inside. The house mirtillo (blueberry) liqueur is the local order.

Practical Notes

Most aperitivo spots don't take reservations for the bar area — arrive by 19:00 if you want a table rather than standing room, especially Thursday through Saturday. The buffet is a genuine perk but rarely a substitute for dinner if you're hungry; plan a proper meal for afterward, particularly if your aperitivo stop is in Trastevere or Testaccio, both dense with good late dinner options.
