Appian Way Catacombs & Bike Tour

Cycle the original Roman road out past pine-lined tombs and ancient paving to the underground catacombs of San Callisto — early Christian burial tunnels running for kilometres beneath the countryside.

The catacombs themselves can only be visited with a guide — independent access isn't allowed, for preservation reasons as much as the genuine risk of getting lost in tunnels running for kilometres. The cycling sections are on the original Roman paving, which is uneven and slower going than it looks in photos; this suits a reasonably fit, casual rider more than a serious cyclist looking for speed.
